WAITED SO LONG FOR THIS DAY
We rolled out of bed,
And hoped for clear skies later.
One thing on our minds.
High atop the hills in Penfield on April 8, 2024 at 8:00a
STILL WANTING TO BELIEVE
Clouds filled up the sky -
And people started to joke.
The day seemed so doomed.
High atop the hills in Penfield on April 8, 2024 at 2:00p
NO EYE DAMAGE IN ROCHESTER
They were hard to get.
Wore them only for pictures.
Never needed them.
THE SILENCE PUT THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE
We looked. We listened.
Grateful for those around us.
Nothing else mattered.
WE WILL REMEMBER FOREVER
Lasting memory -
Total eclipse of the sun.

PENFIELD ECLIPSE 2024
Imagine the moon 🌚 passing between the sun 🌞 and the earth 🌎 perfectly such that the moon completely blacks out the sun 🌑 and YOU are in the shadow. The path of the total solar eclipse passes through Penfield, NY. This will not create a nighttime effect, but instead a deep dusk.
FAST FACTS
It is a rare event - make the most of it! I hope you enjoy this collection of Penfield Eclipse resources.
Total Solar Eclipse - April 8, 2024
As the moon moves across the sun, there will be a short-lived moment where several points of lights shine around the moon's edges - almost like a pearl necklace.
⛑️ Safety First - KEEP YOUR GLASSES ON
Bally's Beads will begin to disappear, and one single bright spot will remain along the edge of the moon - almost appearing like a diamond ring.
⛑️ Safety First - KEEP YOUR GLASSES ON
- 360-degree sunset
- temperature drops about 10 degrees

1. ** Feel free to take off your glasses **
2. Don't bother taking pictures - let the professionals do it for you; just enjoy the moment
3. If you are inclined in taking pictures, then do so of your loved ones. This is a moment you will not forget.
Depending on your location, totality (total darkness) will last about 3 minutes and 38 seconds.
1. ** Feel free to take off your glasses **
We can expect a sudden drop in temperature — a very noticeable part of the solar eclipse experience.
1. ** Feel free to take off your glasses **
During the drop in temperature during a solar eclipse, the corona sends solar wind made of plasma out in all directions, traveling beyond the boundaries of our solar system.
So as the eclipse cools the air, the atmosphere calms down and wind speeds drop because the atmosphere isn't working as hard to balance itself out.

Gravity anomaly will occur during the solar eclipse. The change of Earth's gravitational pull happens because of the varying distribution of mass between the Earth, Moon, and Sun during the eclipse.
The Moon blocks the Sun's gravity, causing a slight decrease in the Earth's overall gravitational pull.
During the solar eclipse, we will be able to experience a 360-degree sunset. It is the effect of the light just outside of the shadow — once in a lifetime experience for sure.
1. ** Feel free to take off your glasses **
The solar eclipse is a puzzling event for humans and animals alike. Daytime animals may start thinking it is time to sleep, while nocturnal animals may think they have overslept!
1. ** Feel free to take off your glasses **
Shhh. Observe the environment around you. An eerie silence will settle in - peek at the people around you - many people go into a deep emotional response at Totality.
1. ** Feel free to take off your glasses **
The solar eclipse is truly once in a lifetime opportunity - the last solar eclipse that our town was able to experience in totality was in 1925. The next one for this area will be in 120 years, October 26, 2144. No doubt, this event offers both educational and ooh-aah's experiences. That being said, Penfield Schools have decided to give the kids a holiday - NO SCHOOL - so everyone can enjoy and learn together.
Local businesses and government offices have started to close for the day, too! 😃

It's all in the order of the objects. If you have the SUN - MOON - EARTH 🌎 (and you are in the shadow), then you are experiencing a solar eclipse. If you have the SUN - EARTH 🌎 - MOON, then you will witness a lunar eclipse. Both are special, but the solar eclipse is 400x more special.
The moon is 1/4 the diameter 📏of the earth.
The sun is 400x the size of the moon
From the earth's perspective, the sun is 400x farther away from us than the moon.

1. TOTAL - the moon completely covers the sun (this is what we will all experience on April 8th) - perfection 👌. We will be able to see the outermost part of the Sun's atmosphere called the Corona!
2. ANNULAR - the sun is a little closer to the earth or the moon is a little farther. The uncovered area of the sun formsna bright ring around the Moon, often called the ring of fire 🔥.
3. PARTIAL - you see this when you are outside of the main shadow (this is what parts of NYC will experience... ha ha). The Moon blocks part of the Sun, but is not centered from our viewpoint.
When the moon completely blocks the sun during a total solar eclipse, you can remove your eclipse glasses. 🕶 This will last only momentarily - remember to put your glasses back on (or don't look at the sun) during the other moments (i.e. during the partial eclipse periods).
My son and I thoroughly enjoyed your presentation Jim. We learned a lot about the eclipse and enjoyed arts and crafts. We came away with knowledge and a pinhole viewer.
Most of all, we learned important safety:
** DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN (WITHOUT EYE PROTECTION) **
This children's picture book presents a father son experience of a solar eclipse. After hearing about the total solar eclipse happening in two months, a boy makes a plan with his father to go see it. They drive to the perfect campsite, not wanting to miss the couple of minutes when the sun will be completely hidden by the moon. When the moment happens, being together makes it even more special.
Based on a trip that author-illustrator Andy Rash took with his son to see the eclipse in August 2017, Eclipse is a heartfelt and playfully illustrated ode to seeking out unique adventures and savoring the most special moments with the people you love. Back matter about eclipses and maps of eclipses' paths across the United States make this book perfect for the STEAM curriculum.

I LOVE NY has done a great job of summarizing information about the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse specific to New York State. Across the US, 4 million people are expected to travel to be in the "path of totality" - pumping 1 billion dollars into local economies. 300,000 - 500,000 visitors expected to visit Rochester, more than doubling its population of 211,000.
